Red Eyes, Blurry Vision and Floaters: Which Symptoms Need Urgent Attention?

One of the most common dilemmas patients face is knowing when an eye symptom requires immediate attention and when it can wait for a regular appointment. While I always encourage you to call our office if you're concerned, I want to help you understand which symptoms are urgent and which are typically less worrisome.

Symptoms That Need Immediate Attention

These symptoms warrant same-day evaluation or emergency care. If you experience any of these, contact our office immediately or go to an emergency department:

Sudden Vision Loss

Any sudden loss of vision, whether complete or partial, in one or both eyes requires urgent evaluation. This could indicate serious conditions such as retinal detachment, stroke affecting the eye, or blocked blood vessels in the retina.

Action:

Contact our office immediately. If we're closed, go to the nearest emergency department.

Flashes of Light and New Floaters

While occasional floaters are common and usually harmless, a sudden onset of multiple new floaters, especially when accompanied by flashes of light or a shadow or curtain across your vision, can indicate a retinal tear or detachment.

Action:

Call our office right away. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency and prompt treatment can save your vision.

Severe Eye Pain

Sudden, severe eye pain, especially when accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or seeing halos around lights, could indicate acute angle-closure glaucoma—a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent vision loss.

Action:

This requires immediate emergency care. Go to the nearest emergency department if our office is closed.

Eye Injury

Any significant injury to the eye, including chemical splashes, puncture wounds, or blunt trauma with vision changes, requires urgent evaluation.

Action:

For chemical injuries, immediately flush the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes, then seek emergency care. For other injuries, contact our office immediately or go to an emergency department.

Sudden Double Vision

New onset of double vision, especially if accompanied by drooping eyelids, headache, or difficulty speaking,
